Sunflower Crochet Amigurumi Pattern

Information

Skill Level: Intermediate. As long as you can make a magic ring/circle and work single crochets in rounds, increase, decrease and stitch together, then you’ll be fine.

20150215_105157.jpgYarn: Stylecraft: yellow, gold, green, brown.

Feel free to use any yarn type as long as you use the correct hook size for that yarn and expect that the results will vary slightly from mine.

Other materials needed: Scissors, yarn needle for sewing together, toy stuffing and a stitch marker (unless you prefer to count).

Hook: 3.75 mm. Again, use the hook that fits the yarn. A yarn hook suggestion is normally written on the yarn label.

I will be using US terminology even though I am from the UK because I was taught how to crochet by some lovely American people on YouTube. If you have trouble understanding US terminology, I have included a stitch conversion chart below.

The Pattern

The Centre of the Sunflower
Using gold colour yarn.
Round 1: form a magic ring and make 6 sc in the ring (6 sts).
Round 2 (inc): (Sc2inc) 6 times (12 sts).
Round 3 (inc): (Sc2inc, 1 sc) 6 times (18 sts).
Round 4 (inc): (Sc2inc, 2 sc) 6 times (24 sts).
Round 5 (inc): (Sc2inc, 3 sc) 6 times (30 sts).
Round 6-7: Sc in each stitch around.
Round 8 (dec): (Sc2dec, 3 sc) 6 times (24 sts).
Round 9 (dec): (Sc2dec, 2 sc) 6 times (18 sts).
Round 10 (dec): (Sc2dec, 1 sc) 6 times (12 sts).
Stuff the sunflower centre, but not too firmly.
Round 11 (dec): (Sc2dec) 6 times (6 sts).
Weave your needle through the remaining stitches and draw together. Sew the opening shut neatly and fasten off.

The Petals (make 9)
Using yellow colour yarn.
Round 1: form a magic ring and make 4 sc in the ring (4 sts).
Round 2 (inc): (Sc2inc) 4 times (8 sts).
Round 3-6: Sc in each stitch around.
Single crochet along the opening of the petal to close it.
Sew the petals to the centre of the sunflower.

The Stem
Using green colour yarn. You will need to stuff this firmly as you go to ensure that it keeps the flower upright.
Round 1: form a magic ring and make 4 sc in the ring (4 sts).
Round 2 (inc): (Sc2inc) 4 times (8 sts).
Round 3-26: Sc in each stitch around (alternatively, you don’t have to count the rounds, simply continuing crocheting until the stem measures 15cm).
Do not fasten off.

The Soil
Join brown colour yarn to the stem.
Round 27 (inc): (Sc2inc) 8 times (16 sts).
Round 28 (inc): (Sc2inc, 1 sc) 8 times (24 sts).
Round 29 (inc): (Sc2inc, 2 sc) 8 times (32 sts).
Round 30 (inc): (Sc2inc, 3 sc) 8 times (40 sts).
Round 31 (inc): (Sc2inc, 4 sc) 8 times (48 sts).
Round 32 (inc): (Sc2inc, 5 sc) 8 times (56 sts).
Round 33-34: Sc in each stitch around.
Do not fasten off.
The Pot
Join gold colour yarn to the soil.
Round 35: Sc in each stitch around.
Round 36 (dec): (Sc2dec, 5 sc) 8 times (48 sts).
Round 37-44: Sc in each stitch around.
Round 45 (dec): (Scdec, 4sc) 8 times (40 sts).
Round 46-55: Sc in each stitch around.
At this point I pulled the pot down around a plastic cup filled with gravel. You can use any stuffing you like as long as it is heavy enough to keep the sunflower standing. I also used a wooden skewer to keep the stem upright, but you may not need to do this if you have stuffed sufficiently.
The following decreases are done around a plastic cup so it can be quite fiddly. Stick with it, you’re nearly there!
Round 56 (dec): (Scdec, 3sc) 8 times (32 sts).
Round 57 (dec): (Scdec, 2sc) 8 times (24 sts).
Round 58 (dec): (Scdec, 1sc) 8 times (16 sts).
Round 59 (dec): (Scdec) 8 times (8 sts).
Weave your needle through the remaining stitches and draw together. Sew the opening shut neatly and fasten off.

Finishing off
If you haven’t already, sew the sunflower head to the stem and voila! You have a beautiful sunflower.
