Amigurumi Unicorn Written Pattern

Crochet Amigurumi Unicorn Written Pattern

YouTube tutorial available via this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFidN1R49b8&t=1143s

Skill Level: Easy/Intermediate. As long as you can make a magic ring/circle and work single crochets in rounds, increase, decrease and stitch together, then you’ll be fine!

Yarn: Double Knit Special by Stylecraft  in White (1001) and green, pink, blue and yellow.
Feel free to use any yarn type as long as you use the correct hook size for that yarn and expect that the results will vary slightly from mine.

Other materials needed: Scissors, yarn needle for sewing together, toy stuffing and a stitch marker (unless you prefer to count).

Hook: 3.75mm. Again, use the hook that fits the yarn. A yarn hook suggestion is normally written on the yarn label.

I will be using US terminology throughout.

I use the magic ring in all amigurumi because it gives the best results. I have a YouTube tutorial for this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yX0ZG4ef74&t=253s

I made this little unicorn in rounds and occasionally in rows, but I have indicated in the step by step guide exactly what you need to be doing at all times. Where possible, I have included photos so that you know exactly what your project should look like throughout.

Body
Using white yarn. Starting from the tail end.
Round 1: Form a magic ring and make 6 sc in the ring (6 sts).
Round 2 (inc): (Sc2inc) 6 times (12 sts).
Round 3 (inc): (Sc2inc, 1 sc) 6 times (18 sts).
Round 4 (inc): (Sc2inc, 2 sc) 6 times (24 sts).
Round 5 (inc): (Sc2in, 3 sc) 6 times (30 sts).
Round 6 (inc): (Sc2in, 4 sc) 6 times (36 sts).
Rounds 7-23 (17 rounds): Sc in each sc around. Use the stitch marker in this case because you have a lot of rounds to keep track of. Alternatively, you can count the rounds every now and then to check that you have the right amount.

Begin to shape the front of the body and the neck. This section is worked in rows. 20150314_123748.jpg
Row 1 (dec): 1 sc in the next 14 sc, (sc2dec) twice, 1 sc in the next 14 sc, turn.
Row 2: chain 1, 1 sc in the next 30 sc, turn.
Row 3 (dec): chain 1, 1 sc in the next 13 sc, (sc2dec) twice, 1 sc in the next 13 sc, turn.
Row 4: chain 1, 1 sc in the next 28 sc, turn.
Row 5 (dec): chain 1, 1 sc in the next 12 sc, (sc2dec) twice, 1 sc in the next 12 sc, turn.
Row 6: chain 1, 1 sc in the next 26 sc, turn.
Row 7 (dec): chain 1, 1 sc in the next 11 sc, (sc2dec) twice, 1 sc in the next 11 sc, turn.
Row 8: chain 1, 1 sc in the next 24 sc, turn.
Begin to stuff the body.
Row 9: chain 1, fold work in half and slip stitch into the back loops only of both sides until the front side of the body is closed up. Fasten off and sew in loose tail. You will have an opening left for the neck. Add more stuffing to the body until it is firm.

Neck
Join white yarn onto the neck opening at one of the corners. Now, your neck may vary from mine depending on how many stitches you can get from the opening. I would use this part as a guideline. As long as you create a neck that is wide enough to support the head and high enough to look realistic then you will succeed. Otherwise, see the directions for my method.
Round 1-2: 1 sc in each sc around (21 sts).
Round 3 (dec): sc2dec, 5 sc, sc2dec, 5  sc, sc2dec, 5 sc (18 sts).
Round 4: 1 sc in each sc around. 20150314_151242.jpg
Slip stitch into the next stitch and fasten off. Leave enough yarn to sew the head onto the neck. Stuff the neck and sew on the head.

Head
Using white yarn.
Round 1: Form a magic ring and make 6 sc in the ring (6 sts).
Round 2 (inc): (Sc2inc) 6 times (12 sts).
Round 3 (inc): (Sc2inc, 1 sc) 6 times (18 sts).
Round 4-5: 1 sc in each sc around.
Round 6 (inc): (Sc2inc, 2 sc) 6 times (24 sts).
Round 7-8: 1 sc in each sc around.
Round 9 (inc): (Sc2in, 3 sc) 6 times (30 sts).
Round 10- 19: 1 sc in each sc around.
Round 20 (dec): (Sc2dec, 3 sc) 6 times (24 sts).
Round 21 (dec): (Sc2dec, 2 sc) 6 times (18 sts).
Round 22 (dec): (Sc2dec, 1 sc) 6 times (12 sts).
Stuff the head firmly.
Round 23 (dec): (Sc2dec) 6 times (6 sts).
Slip stitch into the next stitch and fasten off leaving a long tail to sew up the opening and to sew the head to the body.

Ears (make 2)
Using white yarn.
Round 1: Form a magic ring and make 6 sc in the ring (6 sts).
Round 2-5: 1 sc in each sc around.
Slip stitch into the next stitch and fasten off leaving a tail for sewing.
Fold the ear in half and sew together. Sew the ear to the side of the head as show in the photo. 20150314_154603.jpg

Horn
Using white yarn.
Round 1: Form a magic ring and make 6 sc in the ring (6 sts).
Crochet into the back loops only.
Round 2: 1 sc in each sc around.
Round 3 (inc): (Sc2inc, 1 sc) 3 times (9 sts).
Round 4-6: 1 sc in each sc around.
Stuff the horn.
Slip stitch into the next stitch and fasten off and leave a tail for sewing. Sew the horn to the top centre of the head, between the two ears.

Eyes
Embroider two little eyes on the seventh round up.

Legs (make 4)
Starting with yellow yarn.
Round 1: Form a magic ring and make 6 sc in the ring (6 sts). 20150314_155854.jpg
Round 2 (inc): (Sc2inc) 6 times (12 sts).
Round 3: Sc into the back loops of each sc around.
Change to white yarn.
Round 4-9: 1 sc in each sc around.
Stuff the legs.
Slip stitch into the next stitch and fasten off leaving a long tail to sew the leg to the appropriate position of the body. See photo for guidance.

Mane 20150314_174402.jpg
Starting with yellow yarn.
Chain 16.
Row 1: 1 sc in each stitch (15 sts).
Change to pink yarn.
Chain 16
Row 1: 1 sc in each stitch (15 sts).
Change to green yarn.
Chain 16
Row 1: 1 sc in each stitch (15 sts).
Change to blue yarn.
Chain 16
Row 1: 1 sc in each stitch (15 sts).
Tie all loose ends in a knot around the horn (this will be covered later with the fringe). Sew in all the loose ends.

Fringe
Using the pink yarn. 20150314_181754.jpg
Chain 10.
Row 1: 1 sc in each stitch along (9 sts).
Slip stitch and fasten off.

Using the yellow yarn.
Chain 10.
Row 1: 1 sc in each stitch along (9 sts).
Slip stitch and fasten off.

Using the blue yarn.
Chain 10.
Row 1: 1 sc in each stitch along (9 sts).
Slip stitch and fasten off.

Using the green yarn.
Chain 10.
Row 1: 1 sc in each stitch along (9 sts).
Slip stitch and fasten off.

Sew each piece onto the forehead individually. Sew the ends down into a point on the forehead.

Tail20150314_175943.jpg
Make as for the mane, but sew into the back in one clump as opposed to separated out (see photo for more detail).

You’re all done!

  1. I am looking to make a baby mobile to go over a crib. I’m wondering if the finished size is small enough
